Maidenhead - An ancient town with a historical past harping back to far off Saxon periods, Maidenhead is located in the county of Berks in the Home Counties, within the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead around twenty five mls from the City of London. The town has got a population of approximately seventy eight thousand & lies beside the River Thames. Maidenhead is a substantial 'dormitory' suburb of the city of London, but is still a useful locale for discovering the nearby countryside. The Thames here is spanned by an 18th century road bridge in addition to a fine railway bridge erected in 1838 by the tremendous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the rail bridge is the subject of J M W Turner's work 'Rain, Steam & Speed'. The river at Maidenhead is in addition noted for Boulter's Lock, a popular boating meeting place & beauty spot. To the west of the town is the Courage Shire Horse Centre, a place that the widely recognized brewers 12 Shire horses can be viewed, along with a display on the history of the horses. In Maidenhead town itself you can find almshouses dating from as far back as sixteen fifty nine. The Harry Reitlinger Bequest is an interesting collection of sculpture, paintings, pottery and glassware. Ray Mill Island is a park, and the mill later became a hotel. The celebrated house of Cliveden looks down on the river in nearby Taplow.

Maidenhead Historical Past: The former settlement of Maidenhythe evolved by the the River Thames during the days of the Saxons. The famous bridge across the Thames was constructed in around 1777 (for around nineteen thousand pounds), the original wooden bridge, first built in 1255 had a wharf built adjacent to it and this is where the town is believed to have been named (taken from 'New Wharf' or 'Maiden Hythe'). Following the erection of this 1st bridge, Maidenhead grew to become a key stop off place for travellers making the route from London to Bath.

Maidenhead Bridge and River Thames - - 205285The railway found its way to Maidenhead in 1838 (Great Western Railway) & a rail bridge was erected over the river to a design by the incredible Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Throughout the 19th Century Maidenhead became a popular riverside resort for London's affluent & prosperous & the hotel adjacent to the Thames became the hang-out of famous playboys of those times. After the coming of the railway line the town grew pretty quickly & in 1894 it separated from the parishes of Cookham & Bray, becoming a town in its own right.

Present day Maidenhead is in the centre of 'communter country' & its strategic location on the A4/ M4 makes it an important commercial centre for the region. While many travel from Maidenhead to The City & various other significant towns in the region, the town itself has some light industry & employs many in such sectors as computer software, plastics & pharmaceuticals.

Maidenhead is widely known for its football team Maidenhead United (nicknamed the Magpies) which plays at York Rd among the oldest grounds on the planet. Maidenhead United were established in eighteen seventy & were one of the original 15 entries in the 1st F.A. Cup competition held in 1871-72.
