Athlete\'s footPodiatry: Podiatry or podiatric medicine is a part of medicine focused upon research into diagnosis, surgical and medical treatments of disorders of the ankle, foot, and lower leg. The expression podiatry was used for the first time during the early 20th century in the States and in modern times is applied across the world, most notably in nations like Australia and Great Britain.

A professional Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, is a medical practitioner who diagnoses and treats disorders impacting the lower legs, the foot and the ankle. The teaching of podiatric physicians comprises surgery and pharmacology, general medicine, human anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, sociological and psychological perspectives. Consultant podiatric physicians are the ones with additional postgrad training or fellowship teaching and also practical experience in the specialized discipline.

In the area of podiatry, American qualified podiatric physicians move through principal disciplines of medicine attaining practice and exposure to sectors like: diabetes, surgery, sports medicine, bio-mechanics, paediatrics, geriatrics, neurological, orthopedics, primary care, internal medicine, dermatological, vascular, to name a few.

Podiatry is exercised as a specialty in most countries, whilst in many English-speaking nations, the elder name of chiropodist will be used by a few doctors. The scope and extent of podiatry practice may differ from place to place.

The art of specialized foot treatments was in existence in ancient Egypt with stone carvings from about 2400BC showing evidence of this, where work on the hands and feet is represented. Hippocrates reported calluses and corns, and he realized the need to get rid of hardened skin, combined with removing what's causing it. He developed skin scraping instruments for this function and they were the original scalpels.

Up to the start of the twentieth century, chiropodists - today generally known as podiatrists - were outside of traditional medicine. Practitioners were independently certified doctors who took care of the feet, ankles and associated leg parts. There exist reports of the King of France using the services of his own personal podiatrist (chiropodist), as did Napoleon Bonaparte. In the United States, President Abraham Lincoln had continuing problems with respect to his feet and identified a chiropodist (podiatrist) called Isachar Zacharie, who not merely dealt with Lincoln's feet, but in addition was sent out by Lincoln on confidential missions to talk to commanders of the Confederacy at the time of the American Civil War.

The earliest society of podiatrists, then called chirpodists, was incorporated in New York in the 1890s and still carries on there currently as NYSPMA. The very first school of podiatry opened up in nineteen eleven. A year later the British established a society at the London Foot Hospital and likewise a school was incorporated in 1919.
