Maidenhead - A historic town with a historic past stretching back to early Saxon times, Maidenhead can be found in the county of Berks in the Home Counties, within the Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead around forty kilometers from central London. The town has got a population of roughly 78,000 & stands on the banks of the River Thames. The town of Maidenhead is a substantial 'dormitory' suburb for London, however is still a nice locality for discovering the stunning nearby countryside. Maidenhead History: The original settlement of Maiden Hythe started beside the the River Thames during Saxon times. The famed bridge across the river was made in about 1777 (at a cost of £19,000), the original bridge of wood construction, first built in 1255 had a wharf adjacent to it and it is from this that the town is believed to have been named (from 'New Wharf' or 'Maiden Hythe'). After the erection of this first bridge, Maidenhead grew to become a key stopping off point for travellers taking the route from London to Bath.

In the Nineteenth Century Maidenhead became a very popular riverside destination for the wealthy & affluent of London & the hotel by the riverbank became the hang-out of infamous playboys of those times. Following the arrival of the railway line Maidenhead grew rapidly and in 1894 it separated from the parishes of Cookham and Bray, developing into a town in its own right.
